Instagram became one of the censorship victim in China. According to the latest messages from the Chinese Instagram users and some of the international journalists, Instagram was blocked in local cities because of thousands of photo stories, showing the truth about the current situation in the Chinese city and including of Hong Kong police firing tear gas at demonstrators.
Many of photos and videos were labeled with the hashtag “Occupy Central” (for now about 5M labeled images) – the same trend, which got also a huge popularity on the Twitter like local Social Network Weibo and was blocked last Sunday to avoid the immediate spread.
The website blockedinchina.net also confirmed that Instagram is still blocked Beijing, Shenzen and other big cities. Still it is not accessible for users in China, it will not prevent users in Hong Kong from posting on social media.
Instagram is not the only web company which has been blocked in China. Due to the local project “Golden Shield”, which should prevent the spread of special pieces of content like porno, political discussions and other unwished topics, the Chinese users don’t have any access either to Twitter, YouTube, Wikipedia or Facebook.
